Great site for SAHM and Working Mom’s alike!

I found a new site that offers great information for mom’s that want to stay home with their children and engage in a home based business.  Check out some of their ideas and their website for more good information: (http://smartmomma.com/work_career/great_businesses.htm):

  • Tutor/Teacher – Whether it’s computers, musical instruments, or homework help, start teaching for some extra cash.
  • Daycare Operator – Check your local child development government office to see the requirements for operating a home daycare. Some states do not require licensing if you watch just two children or less.
  • Antiques – Scout out the local yard sales and estate sales to buy some antiques. Refurbish or just resell. eBay is a great place to sell antiques.
  • Crafts & Jewelry– Are you a creative type? If so, think about selling your own crafts or jewelry at flea markets or online.
  • Fitness Instructor – Teach Pilates, Yoga, or be a Personal Trainer. This requires certification in most states. Once you are ready, train at the Rec Center or call local Fitness Clubs to see if you can offer your services. Get the word out of your qualifications.
  • Scrapbooking– Do you enjoy scrapbooking your family photos? Many moms don’t have time to scrapbook. Show off your skills for your friends and hand out some business cards. Networking should get you some clients that would like you to turn their photos into works of art.
  • E-Business – Start an informational website or sell products on the web. E-Business is a huge trend and is growing more every year.
  • Sell on eBay– This deserves its own category, since its one of the fastest growing category of new business in the U.S. Sell on EBay or sell stuff for others on EBay.
  • Desktop Publishing/Virtual Assistant – Were you a former Office Manager or Administrative Assistant? Put those skills to use by offering a Virtual Assistant on call business.
  • Catering/Event Planning – Are you a whiz in the kitchen? Did you receive heaps of complements when you helped plan your niece’s wedding? Look into starting your own catering or event planning service.
  • Bookkeeping – Are you great at accounting? Many of us are not and need your help. Start a bookkeeping business to help small business with their books.

  1. Thanks you Kim. You have covered most of the topics. I am working mom too.

  2. I split my time between working from home and office. All great options mentioned above. For those moms who are thinking about launching a business, strongly consider securing a partner that makes you stronger and better at the end of the day. There will come a time where you may realize that you can’t do it all and that the strength of a partner like mine (Terry), will only make your business more successful at the end of the day.

According to Wikipedia, a partnership is a type of business entity in which partners (owners) share with each other the profits or losses of the business. Although, Terry and I will tell you that our partnership extends far beyond this textbook definition. This past weekend Terry scored an interview with Jill Zarin, star of the Real Housewives of NYC. The interview was scheduled for July 4 at 2pm at the home of Jill Zarin (newest member of Butterfly) in Sag Harbor, aka “The Hamptons.” Terry loaded her family into the car, video camera in hand, and set off for a 2 1/2 hour drive. Her partner, that’d be me, was already scheduled to be in Connecticut with the extended family for the fourth. I had huge aspirations of jetting across the Long Island Sound to make the interview but, the seven hour round trip deterred me (as did the rough waters that turned my face green). Here’s where the partnership part comes in and the notion that sometimes it’s best to divide and conquer in order to make things happen. Terry’s interview with Jill turned into a 2 1/2 hour visit that included face time with Jill’s mom Gloria, another star of the Real Housewives of NYC. Terry even went as far as to set up a bridge date for her mom Betty and Gloria in Boca Raton. Interview coming to Butterfly soon, thanks to my partner.
